The emergency medical technician field grew by almost 90 first responders last month when Crafton Hills College celebrated its newest crop of graduates.

Students from four program cohorts were recognized for their accomplishments with laughter, a few tears, and celebratory cheers in a packed Finkelstein Performing Arts Center on Dec. 19.

Instructors from the four EMT cohorts took turns introducing their students individually by name while their loved ones in the audience cheered. John Grounds, Skylar Antoncew, David Molloy, and Heather Saenz each applauded their students’ commitment to the field overcoming the roadblocks they faced, such as unexpected weather advisories, technology glitches, and nearly impossible schedules.

“This semester marked my first time teaching my very own EMT class, and it has been an incredible journey,” said Antoncew. “You guys are living reminders of the good in this world. Guiding and learning alongside you these past 16 weeks has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.”

“Normally I would apologize for the stress I sent these students home with,” said Molloy. “But I’m not going to because we have an extraordinary group of EMTs up here.”

Crafton’s EMT program prepares students for entry-level employment upon graduation. In addition to completing certification requirements, all graduates must become state-certified to work as an EMT in ambulatory services, fire departments, and hospitals. Through the generous support of the community and the Crafton Hills College Foundation, each Fall graduate received a check to cover testing and licensing expenses.
