Meet Crafton Hills College Next President at Nov. 13 Candidate Forum

Advisory committee of faculty, staff and students have narrowed national search to four candidates
San Bernardino Community College District Chancellor Bruce R. Baron announced today that the advisory committee of college faculty, staff, students and community leaders helping in the national search for a new president to lead Crafton Hills College has narrowed its search to four candidates: Dr. Eric Bishop, Dr. Kevin Horan, Dr. Kimberlee Messina, and Dr. Lisa B. Rhine.
"This is a transformative time in the history of Crafton Hills College, and we welcome the community's involvement in finding the right leader to engage faculty, staff, students, alumni and our wider community to propel the campus to new heights," said Chancellor Baron.
Candidates will present their vision for Crafton Hills College's future and take questions from the public on Tuesday, November 13 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Learning Resource Center room 231 at Crafton Hills College, 11711 Sand Canyon Road, Yucaipa, CA 92399.

Dr. Eric Bishop
Eric Bishop is vice president of student services at Chaffey College, in Rancho Cucamonga, California. He has been at the college since 2007 and has served as dean of the Fontana campus, interim dean of physical education and athletics, and director of student discipline and grievance. He serves as Title IX compliance officer, and as a tri-chair on the president’s equity council for the college. His position oversees 15 student service areas including among others counseling, and special populations and equity programs. Additionally, he serves as the Region IX representative for the chief student services officers executive board, and he leads with a vision of wanting to make higher education a reality for everyone who holds the desire to pursue that goal.
Before taking the position at Chaffey, Bishop was associate dean of academic support and retention at the University of La Verne and taught journalism and mass media studies full time for seven years. He currently serves as an adjunct faculty member for the University of La Verne, as well as in the doctoral program at San Diego State University. He also serves as the student affairs chair on the Bethany Theological Seminary Board of Trustees in Richmond, Indiana.
Bishop completed his doctorate in organizational leadership (Ed.D.) from La Verne University in 2008 and earned his bachelors (1988 in journalism), and masters (1994 in communications). He lives in Pomona with his wife, Shanta, and his 8-year-old daughter, Emilee.
Dr. Kevin Horan
Dr. Kevin Horan is in his thirteenth year working in the Contra Costa Community College District and his seventh year serving as the vice president of instruction and student services at Los Medanos College. He has led efforts at Los Medanos College to significantly increase student success, including an emphasis on inclusion and collaboration between instruction and student services, increasing distance education, developing a new student success unit, and implementing guided pathways. In addition to serving as the chief instructional officer and leading student services, he has led the planning and implementation of over $125 million in bond-funded facilities projects, including modernizing classroom technology, a new student union, a new kinesiology, and athletics center, and a new permanent Brentwood campus. During this time he also served as the interim accreditation liaison officer and on three ACCJC visitation teams. Horan’s leadership contributed to Los Medanos College being nominated as one of the top 150 community colleges eligible to receive the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence in 2017 and 2019.
Horan earned an educational doctorate in educational leadership from Saint Mary’s College, a master of science in college student personnel from Western Illinois University, and a bachelor of arts in government and dramatic arts from Saint Mary’s College. Before joining the Contra Costa Community College District in 2006, Horan served as the director of campus affairs at California State University East Bay’s Concord Campus, director of student affairs at Samuel Merritt University, and director of residence life/auxiliary services at Holy Names University.
A resident of Brentwood since 2002, Horan continues to be active in his community and currently serves as the vice chair of the city’s parks and recreation commission and as chair of the Brentwood Union School District Measure B oversight committee. When not working passionately on increasing student success and access to higher education, you will most likely find him camping with his wife, Erica, and two children, Sage and Reid.
Dr. Kimberlee Messina
Dr. Kimberlee Messina has been serving as interim president of Foothill College since Aug. 1, 2015 and has served as Foothill's vice president of instruction and institutional research since 2011.
A passionate and committed educator who has served the California Community Colleges for more than 26 years, Messina's career path includes service as a “freeway flyer” adjunct faculty, a tenured Spanish instructor, a two-term academic senate president, and an instructional dean at Santa Rosa Junior College.
An accomplished public speaker, she has presented to the statewide Academic Senate and the Association of California Community College Administrators. She has served on a number of accreditation site teams and currently serves as the co-chair of the technical assistance committee for the statewide Institutional Effectiveness Partnership Initiative, a member of the board of the Association for California Community College Administrators (ACCCA) and the committee for legislative advocacy.
Messina holds a bachelor's degree in sociology and a master's degree in Spanish from CSU Sacramento and a doctorate in educational leadership from UC Davis.
Dr. Lisa B. Rhine
Dr. Lisa B. Rhine currently serves as provost and chief operating officer of the Chesapeake Campus, including the Regional Automotive Center and the Tri-Cities Center, at Tidewater Community College in Virginia. Rhine brings 30 years of experience in student services and academic affairs at the community college and university level.
Rhine began her career in higher education, serving in various student services functions for 11 years at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio. Subsequently, she took positions in academic affairs at the University of Dayton and at Wittenberg University before returning to student services at Northern Kentucky in 2008.
Her accomplishments include successful industry-education partnerships gained with the City of Chesapeake, industry partners and Chesapeake Public Schools, policy and program development, systemic student success and retention initiatives and learning outcomes assessment.
As a first-generation college student working multiple jobs, she self-financed her way through a certificate in deaf studies from Sinclair Community College, a bachelor’s in rehabilitation counseling from Wright State University, a master’s in special education from the University of Dayton and a doctorate in educational administration from Capella University. Honors include selection into the inaugural class of the Aspen Presidential Fellows in 2015-16 and as a presidential protégé in the American Association of State Colleges and Universities’ Millennial Leadership Institute in 2012. She resides with her husband and two sons in Chesapeake, VA.
