Fire Academy 102 Celebration
Publish Date: June 18, 2020
On Friday, May 8th, the 29 cadets from CHC Fire Academy 102 spent their final day of the program celebrating their accomplishments. Some tri-tip, a cake, and tossing around a football replaced the usual bagpipes, formal presentation, and cheering family members of past completion celebrations. Although the cadets sat six feet apart and wore masks, the bond they formed throughout their 16 weeks is undeniable.
While this was not the traditional ceremony the Academy was hoping for, the group appreciated that they were able to celebrate their completion. The CHC Fire Academy was the only academy in the State to remain active during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The college provided the group with a video ceremony that included comments from CHC Fire Academy Chief Mike Alder along with College President Dr. Kevin Horan and Dean of Career Services and Human Development Dan Word. Individual photos and video messages of each cadet were also included. The clear theme expressed by the students was their gratefulness to the SBCCD Board of Trustees and college administration for the opportunity to continue their education and complete the program.
Crafton Hills College alumnus and City of Redlands Battalion Chief Dave Ketcherside spoke to the group about his career in the Fire Service. He highlighted the professional expectations, sacrifices, and rewards of this line of work. Chief Ketcherside’s son was amongst the 29 cadets.
Cal Fire Captain Drew Smith, who served as an instructor for this academy, addressed the group with words of encouragement and advice. He urged the cadets to invest in their community and take pride in their work. Chief Alder presented awards and scholarships to students before Academy squad leaders carried on a tradition by presenting their academy plaque to be displayed in the engine bay.
This group certainly lived up to their motto, Stay True - See it Through.Congratulations Academy 102!
