Celebrating a Legacy: Bill Ahlborn’s 100 Years of Learning, Teaching, and Giving
Publish Date: March 8, 2025

Crafton Hills College representatives had the privilege of attending a very special celebration on March 8: the 100th birthday of alumnus and beloved educator Bill Ahlborn. Bill's connection to Crafton Hills College dates to 1980, when he first enrolled as a student to give him something to do in retirement. His passion for learning quickly evolved into a passion for teaching, and by 1981, he had joined the faculty, beginning a journey that would impact countless students over the years.
Michelle Riggs, Executive Director of the College’s Foundation first met Bill and his wife, Paula, in 2016, a year that marked another milestone in his relationship with the college. That year, Bill was invited to be the keynote speaker at the CHC Foundation Friends Luncheon. His speech, titled "Thank You, Crafton Hills," was quintessentially Bill—filled with humor, insight, and inspiration. He shared how his time at Crafton led him to a second career, giving lectures on cruise ships and teaching at various community colleges and universities across California. His words left the audience both laughing and learning, a testament to his lifelong commitment to education.
Bill’s dedication to Crafton Hills College continued to shine. In 2019, he was the guest speaker at the Scholarship Reception, where he encouraged students to pursue their academic dreams. A year later, in 2020, he was honored as the Crafton Hills College Alumnus of the Year in recognition of his enduring impact on the institution and its students.
In April 2022, the college further cemented Bill and Paula’s legacy by naming the Bill and Paula Ahlborn Courtyard in their honor. Just a few months later, in October, Bill captivated a packed audience of students, faculty, and staff with his lecture "What is a Desert?" Through his expertise in geology, he once again demonstrated his ability to make learning both engaging and accessible.
In 2023, we gathered in the courtyard that bears Bill and Paula’s name to celebrate his 98th birthday. It was a moment to reflect on the many ways he has enriched our community. His contributions extend far beyond lectures and speeches—his endowment ensures that selected students studying Earth Science at Crafton Hills College receive scholarships. More than that, it provides them with opportunities to present their research at a national level, including at a prestigious conference in Colorado. While being accepted into a national conference is an achievement, having the resources to attend is another challenge altogether. Thanks to Bill and Paula’s generosity, these students don’t just get the opportunity—they get to go.
As we celebrate Bill’s 100th birthday, we express our deepest gratitude for his remarkable legacy at Crafton Hills College. His contributions to education, his unwavering support of students, and his infectious love of learning will continue to inspire generations to come. Happy birthday, Bill!
