Timelines for Completing POCR

Peer Online Course Review (POCR) can be a laborious, yet beneficial, process. An online course that is already aligned with the majority of elements in the CVC-OEI Course Design Rubric will complete the POCR process faster compared to a course with numerous incomplete elements. Thus, there is no one-size-fits all timeline for completing POCR. However, we do require that some timeline expectations are agreed upon between reviewers and submitters.

Each semester is a new beginning to the POCR timeline. We expect faculty who commit to the process will endeavor to fully align their online course by the end of the semester in which they begin; again, some may take a shorter amount of time and others may take longer. This is why frequent communication and follow-up between you and the POCR Team is absolutely essential.

Based on our previous POCR work, here is an example timeline:

  • September (Fall) or February (Spring)
    • Faculty member commits to POCR, reviews all provided resources, creates a Sandbox shell, and completes the Course Prep Form
  • October (Fall) or March (Spring)
    • If the CHC POCR Prep Form shows the course to be very close to complete alignment, then the POCR Team will take 2-3 weeks to review the course for a full review.
    • If the CHC POCR Prep Form shows the course is not very close to complete alignment, the submitting faculty will be referred to support resources to revise, update, and redesign their course.
    • Once this is complete, they can submit an updated CHC POCR Prep Form.
  • November (Fall) or April (Spring)
    • Faculty will receive the constructive feedback from the POCR Team and implement the requested revisions and redesigns to the course.
  • December (Fall) or May (Spring)
    • The POCR Team will re-evaluate the requested revisions in the course, and determine if full alignment has been reached.
    • If fully aligned, the course will be submitted to the CVC-OEI for badging.
    • If not yet fully aligned, the faculty may continue revising their work over Winter (or summer) break and resubmit in Spring (or Fall).

Expectations

In addition to the timelines noted above, here are a few more expectations to remember:

  • Faculty submitting their course for POCR are expected to:
    • Respond to POCR-related emails, Canvas messages, and GradeBook comments in a timely manner.
    • Put forward a genuine effort to reach alignment with the CVC-OEI Course Design Rubric.
    • Engage in a collegial manner with all POCR Team members.
  • We have expectations for ourselves too! The POCR Team is expected to:
    • Respond to POCR-related emails, Canvas messages, and Submission Comments in a timely manner.
    • Review courses in a timely manner.
    • Offer constructive feedback and support to submitting faculty.
    • Engage in a collegial manner with all faculty submitters.

Benefits

Participating in POCR can be a very rewarding experience, with direct benefits to our students. Data shows that online courses reviewed with the CVC-OEI Course Design Rubric and offered through the CVC-OEI Course Exchange have a success rate 4.9 percentage points above the statewide average (ASCCC Resolution 9.03 F 2018). We are currently working with the CHC Office of Institutional Effectiveness, Research, and Planning to track locally how POCR-Aligned courses measure in terms of student success.

Additionally, we hope to see our instructors achieve a sense of fulfillment through online teaching. Going through POCR to design the highest-quality course possible is a great way to feel fulfilled with your online classes.
